Starting July 6, 2026, the City of Bath and their contractor, McGee Construction will begin work at the intersection of Front and Elm Streets.

This project will reconstruct the downtown corridor between Front Street, Summer Street, and Elm Street. The project includes roadway and sidewalk reconstruction, drainage improvements, and installation of streetscape elements such as plantings, lighting, and pedestrian amenities.

Work will improve accessibility, safety, and the overall pedestrian experience while maintaining access to downtown businesses throughout construction. The project also includes utility coordination, traffic management, and ADA-compliant pedestrian accommodations during all phases of work.

Downtown remains open for business! We recognize that construction can be disruptive and we are committed to working closely with businesses and property owners throughout the project to minimize impacts and maintain access to downtown destinations.

Work officially began today on the Front and Elm Street reconstruction project, with crews starting site preparation along the eastern side of Front Street and the southern side of Elm Street.

    Traffic Pattern Changes

Drivers should note the following temporary changes:

Elm Street (Water Street to Front Street): one-way eastbound only

Front Street (Elm Street to Summer Street): one-way northbound only

    Parking Impacts

On-street parking near active construction zones may be limited during this phase. Drivers looking for alternatives can use:

The municipal lot on Water Street

    On-street parking along Commercial Street

On-street parking on Front Street, north of the project area

    What to Expect

Crews will begin by installing new drainage along the south side of Elm Street and the east side of Front Street. One lane of traffic will remain open on the opposite side throughout this phase. This work is expected to cause minimal disruption to existing sidewalks, so pedestrian access to nearby businesses and residences should be largely unaffected.

    Update

Sidewalk work along the northern side of Elm Street has been postponed until this fall, when it will begin alongside construction on the western side of Front Street.

We'll continue posting updates as the project progresses — thank you for your patience as we work to improve these streets.
