Harward Street Pump Station & Sewer Interceptor Upgrade Project – Community Update April 2026

Work Completed Last Month

Construction activity continued to progress steadily throughout April, with major milestones achieved on the sewer interceptor installation. Crews completed the railroad crossing, including installation of both the 48” steel casing pipe and 36” sewer pipe within the carrier pipe beneath the tracks. Sewer installation also advanced along Washington Street and the cross-country alignment toward Winship Street.

Blasting and ledge removal operations remained ongoing along the cross-country route behind Washington Street to support trench excavation, with significant progress made along the cross-country route. Over 1,000 cubic yards of ledge have been removed thus far. A temporary bypass pumping system remained in operation to maintain uninterrupted sewer service during construction. Additional work included testing and inspection of new installed sewer lines, erosion control improvements, and site access preparation.

What’s Next

In the coming weeks, construction will continue along the remaining cross-country section, with crews working to complete 36” sewer pipe installation starting near Washington Street and continuing toward Winship Street. Once this segment is complete, work is expected to transition to Park Street around mid-May.

Blasting and rock removal activities will continue as needed based on subsurface conditions. Most ledge has been blasted, but some additional ramming is needed to install the pipe at the correct elevations along the cross-country interceptor. Additional ledge blasting will occur off of High Street near the Dike Newell School and is expected to be complete by the end of April. Additional bypass pumping will be implemented in future phases to support ongoing sewer installation. Early work related to the pump station construction is anticipated to begin in May.

Traffic & Neighborhood Impacts

Residents may continue to notice construction activity in work areas, including heavy equipment, trucking, and intermittent blasting operations. Traffic impacts are expected to remain localized, with short-term disruptions possible as work progresses between different areas.

As work begins in Winship Street, roadway access will be limited to local traffic only. A temporary access road will be installed between Barque Street and Winship Street for emergency vehicles.

The City, contractor, and project team will continue coordinating directly with affected homeowners regarding driveway access, erosion control, landscaping, and property-specific concerns.

Looking Ahead

With spring in the air, many residents have been asking about the potential impacts that the project will have on the Community Garden off of Office Drive. The new sewer line will be installed to the west of the Community Garden and will not impact garden plots. The Contractor is anticipating work beginning in this area mid-July, and hope to finish sewer installation in mid-August. The Contractor will ensure that access to the Community Garden is maintained throughout this work.

The project remains on track overall, despite encountering more ledge than initially anticipated. Crews will continue advancing sewer installation through the spring and into the summer, with major pump station construction activities expected to ramp up in late summer. The City and project team will continue to provide updates as work progresses and key milestones are reached.

The City of Bath, Wright-Pierce, and the contractor will continue working closely together to minimize disruptions and keep residents informed as construction progresses. Additional updates will be shared regularly as milestones are reached.
